Meta Reportedly Licenses ROC Facial Recognition and Liveness Technology for Smart Glasses

Author: Carter H | 17 Jun 2026

Meta’s initiative on smart glasses has come as a surprise to the tech giant, as it has been revealed to be exploring facial recognition and liveness-detection capabilities from biometric software company Rank One Computing (ROC), which has a history of developing state-of-the-art identity verification solutions.

Meta’s AI companion app for its smart glasses technology had code that referenced the technology known as ROC, according to WIRED. The code wasn’t in use and was later removed, but evidence suggests Meta may have been testing biometric capabilities as part of its wearable technology strategy.

The report says the agreement provided Meta with ROC’s facial recognition and liveness-detection technology. The liveness detection feature is an important functionality in today’s biometric systems to ensure that the person attempting to be authenticated is actually present and that a photo, video, mask, or other means of presentation attack is not being used.

The shift underscores the growing importance of secure, seamless identity verification in the realm of new wearable technology, and neither Meta nor ROC has made any public comment on the rumored deal. In addition to communication and entertainment, smart glasses could also include biometric functionality, enabling more individualized, secure, and intuitive user experiences.

The government, defense, and enterprise sectors were responsible for developing and implementing biometric technologies many years ago. Within this context, ROC has become a major supplier of biometric technology products, providing facial recognition and identity verification solutions in these areas. It has proven helpful in security and authentication applications because of its ability to accurately recognize images and detect liveness.

The partnership is one among a variety of initiatives focused on bringing cutting-edge biometric technologies to consumer products. Facial recognition and liveness detection are becoming more popular as personalized digital experiences, and wearables increasingly require these authentication methods to enhance security and streamline the process.

Facial Recognition Continues Expanding Across Smart Devices

Today, consumer technology can use facial recognition in important ways to provide secure authentication and a seamless user experience. Convenience, safety, and trust in mobile devices, smart wearables, and more are enhanced by the development of AI-based recognition and liveness-detection technologies. As connected devices evolve, biometrics will continue to enable personalized interactions and further strengthen identity protection.
