Florida Banning Social Media on Under 14 on 1st January 2025

Author: teresa_myers | 24 Dec 2024

The essential step that has the purpose of securing kids from the huge effects of social media, the Florida state is banning kids under 14 from digital forums. This law will be implemented on January 1st, 2025 specifically designed to sort kids under 14 from using social media forums for the minors’ safety while introducing the age restriction laws. Moreover, this law requires compliance for both ends—users and social media companies.

The new regulations emphasize that kids under the age of 14 will not access, or create their social media accounts. Also, social media forums must have to check the users’ age during the account creation process by using the age verification services.

Social media sites would have to cut the accounts for children under 14; appeals would be heard for 90 days. They would face fines of up to $50,000 on a case-by-case basis. The social media sites are also required to verify and maintain records of users’ ages. These steps could help prevent unauthorized access by children and give parents more control over their children’s access.

Legal Challenges and Opposition

Despite the purpose of protecting minors from social media and its harmful content, this law is experiencing extreme criticism and legal opposition. Critics claim that such laws can violate the First Amendment rights of kids and their families by blocking access to online forums. Furthermore, Attorney General Ashley Moody’s office has confirmed such concerns, ensuring that the law will not be implemented on the huge forums until a judgment verdict is issued. One of the hearings is scheduled for February 2025 to discuss such challenges.

Florida’s law is part of the international move to regulate minors’ access to social media. Recently, Australia banned social media for children under 16 years old, which shows how the world is now waking up to online safety and mental health issues. According to advocates, such regulations are necessary to protect young users from the adverse effects of early exposure to social media. It stands to become a defining point for the regulation of social media for minors as the law is set to take effect in January 2025. It may fuel more debate and reforms that can shape the future of young user interactions on digital platforms across the United States.
