FC Copenhagen Accepted to Utilize Facial Recognition at Matches

FC Copenhagen has received the official acceptance of the facial recognition technology usage during the football matches. However, the Danish Data Protection Agency allowed the usage of FRT after analyzing the case under Section 7(4) of the Danish Data Protection Act. The agreement applies to the football club only, not to the stadium, providing the chance to use biometric data to recognize individuals at Parken Stadium and at opponent venue.

The main purpose of the FR system is to enhance safety by recognizing the individuals who are under club or general match restrictions. The system will be used at the stadium entrance, mobile facilities, game training, and different relevant events that FC Copenhagen will organize. International matches do not fall into the FRT use approval.

As per the decision, every deployment must adopt the strong guidelines. This involves leading the data protection influence assessment before the technology usage. Furthermore, the system will collect the data and must be deleted after 30 days.

The Danish regulator emphasized that the approval only extends to football events. For other events, such as concerts or non-sporting events, facial recognition is not acceptable unless a distinct legal basis for its need is established.
