Virscopos International Airport in Campinas, Brazil, has made a breakthrough by installing the first large-scale advanced biometric and automated passenger boarding solution. This technology has changed air travel by increasing effectiveness, safety, and passenger comfort.
The execution process started with testing at the end of 2024, featuring the latest system comprising 11 automated biometric e-gates. However, 7 out of 11 gates are used at entrances to block areas, whereas 4 gates are used at boarding lounges for domestic and international flights. This project is a result of collaboration between technology SITA, Digicon, and SERPRO, emphasizing their efforts to elevate airport operations.
Furthermore, passengers at Viracopos Airport can utilize the options for the biometric pattern that follows the facial recognition technology. It reduces the demand for manual onboarding pass checks for passengers. Biometric processing registration can be done during check-in, and the passenger can then use the system for up to five years after registration. The convenience is supposed to make the boarding process easy while maintaining a high level of security.
Leading Biometric Technology
GOL Airlines will execute the biometric boarding at Viracopos Airport, alongside Azul Airlines will be using it by this year 2025. However, the airport plans to enhance biometric authentication for safety screenings, automated baggage check-in, VIP lounges, and Duty-Free stores. According to the SITA Americas President Shawn Gregor, this development is a global benchmark making Brazil a prominent leader in air travel innovation. This is SERPRO, partnering with REACT-OnID to boost digital identity verification and curb fraud. By mid-2025, the entire system is due to be implemented, transforming air travel in Brazil. The airport’s biometrics leadership places it at the top globally, moving the needle forward in seamless and secure travel experiences.
