American Airlines Expands Touchless ID Screening to 4 Major Airports

Author: admin | 23 Jul 2025

American Airlines has recently expanded its Touchless ID screening technology to four major U.S. airports, enabling members of its AAdvantage loyalty program and Transportation Security Administration (TSA) PreCheck members to fly through the airport without using traditional IDs and boarding passes. The system utilizes facial recognition to expedite the security process. The airports involved are Washington National (DCA), LaGuardia (LGA), Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta (ATL), and Salt Lake City (SLC).

A biometric system includes a facial scan that matches the faces of travelers with the available government-issued documents, such as passports or visa photos. As explained by American Airlines, the procedure is fast, usually requiring just a few seconds, and is designed to alleviate the bottleneck at security checkpoints.

When traveling, passengers need to sign up with their AAdvantage number, Known Traveler Number (KTN), and passport. The system is not mandatory, and privacy-conscious travelers can continue using common TSA or PreCheck lanes.

According to media reports, Heather Garboden, the American Airlines chief customer officer, stated that the airline company is focused on making the technology available in additional locations, beginning with major hubs.

This recent move by the airline reflects a broader industry shift toward using biometrics to streamline passenger processing. While the technology is promoted as a convenience, some observers have noted the importance of maintaining transparency. Also ensures passengers retain the choice to opt out, especially as biometric systems become more common in air travel.
