VA Explores Biometric Authentication for Identity Verification

Author: admin | 13 May 2025

The Veterans Affairs (VA) department in the United States of America has issued an RFI, Request For Information, to assess biometric authentication technology for a new proof-of-concept project.

This will explore facial and iris recognition systems for secure identity verification in both physical and digital Veterans Affairs settings. The project involves:

  • Site assessments
  • System deployment
  • User enrollment
  • Solution testing

The VA specifically seeks scalable solutions that can work within a single-tenant cloud environment and support integration across healthcare and federal settings.

Vendors are asked to share details of previous biometric deployments, particularly those involving large healthcare systems or government agencies. Submissions must include rough cost estimates for hardware, software, labor, and recurring expenses. Along with feedback on the proposed 12-month implementation timeline and integration challenges with physical access control systems (PACS).

Responses are due by 10:00 AM ET on May 23, 2025, and must be submitted electronically to contracting officials Crystal Lomonaco and Kendra Casebolt. Participation in this Request for Information (RFI) is voluntary and does not guarantee a contract. Any future contracts will be awarded through a competitive bidding process.

The VA’s Technology Acquisition Center leads the effort in Eatontown, NJ. It aligns with efforts to modernize the agency’s identity management framework that uses advanced biometric technologies.

Biometric security tools such as those offered by FACIA can strengthen identity management frameworks for government agencies. That is by delivering real-time facial recognition, liveness detection, and frictionless integration with PACS. These technologies enable accurate identity verification, reduce operational bottlenecks, and help prevent identity fraud at scale. They are critical needs for any public sector initiative handling sensitive data.
