Missouri Enforces Age Verification for Adult Websites

Author: admin | 03 Dec 2025

As of November 30, 2025, Missouri’s newly imposed age-verification rule for adult sites, which was introduced earlier this year has now become effective, thereby making it mandatory for individuals to verify their age prior to viewing any restricted content, such as adult sites. The law, which is to be applied to those sites containing one-third or more adult material, intends to protect them from exposure to the graphic and sexual content. Emerging law has been passed under the Missouri Merchandise Practices Act, and websites dealing with adult content will have to have an age verification system in place for their users.

The law significantly affected the decision, as one of the results was the immediate shutdown of Pornhub’s access for Missouri residents, which led to a discussion regarding the issue of privacy rights being violated. The law was supported by Missouri Attorney General Catherine Hanaway, who stated that the welfare of the children is more important than the concerns of the companies when it comes to the protection of children from Internet porn.

She was very explicit in stating that Missouri will not apologize for defending the families and that any company that prefers to exit the state instead of following the law is at liberty to do so.

The legislation mandates the implementation of age verification techniques on the Internet that can be harmful to children in order to determine the users’ age. Not adhering to this statute can bring about negative consequences like lawsuits and other enforcement measures, along with penalties.

Missouri, by taking such stringent measures, is not just safeguarding kids from the net’s evils, but the state also puts itself in the lead among the others and starts the debate about censorship and safety in cyberspace, with the latter being the issue of the day.

Global Cases of Age Verification Laws

The UK and other countries have experienced similar problems regarding age verification, mainly following the Discord hack, during which sensitive data was exposed. The global concerns associated with age-verification methods, namely, safety and privacy, which make them the central topic of discussion. As a result, the discussion over the limits of online protection of underage children and thier privacy rights has come up again.
