Meta Launches Facial Recognition in UK to Protect Scams

Author: teresa_myers | 07 Mar 2025

Meta launched a facial recognition system in the United Kingdom on March 5 to fight against deepfake scams and help users get their hacked Facebook or Instagram accounts. The latest aspects have the purpose of increasing safety by checking identities via biometric verification. One major aspect is the “celeb bait” prevention that provides the chance for United Kingdom public figures to choose facial recognition to warn against deepfake attempts. Furthermore, video selfie verification enables the users to show their identity if their accounts are locked.

Meta highlights that technology is strongly for the users’ safety purposes and does not secure or utilize facial data more than verification. Any type of biometric data created during the method will be removed right after the use. The development is a measure against the rising menace of internet scams, which involve fraudsters opening fictional profiles to pose as people. Meta seeks to decrease account takeovers and increase users’ confidence in its platforms through the use of facial recognition.

Though the program is aimed at improving security, privacy campaigners have expressed worries about the general implications of facial recognition technology. Meta has guaranteed users that joining is voluntary and that data privacy is still paramount. The rollout reflects growing efforts to strengthen online security amid rising digital fraud cases.
