Meta Increases Verification Efforts in Australia to Curb Misinformation

Author: admin | 25 Mar 2025

The parent company of Facebook and Instagram—Meta is ensuring the fight against spreading misinformation and deepfakes in Australia during the upcoming national elections. The independent fact-verification plan of the company will function to check and restrict the expansion of misleading content on different platforms.

Meta has also revealed that any content—promoting violence, disturbing the voting process, or breaching policies will be eliminated. However, the deceptive content identified by experts will get the threat labels and minimize the visibility on the user’s feed. Some of the agencies such as Agence France-Presse and the Australia Associated Press will help in checking the content.

Furthermore, to manage fabricated news, Meta is resolving the rising issues of AI-generated deepfakes. Content flagged as change will either be eliminated or get a lower rank in the feed to restrict its impact. The users will also be asked to reveal when posting AI-created content.

The action is part of Meta’s efforts to stem election disinformation across the world, also seen in India, the U.K., and the U.S. In Australia, the government continues to mount pressure through regulation, with a proposal for a charge on technology companies making money from local news content. Social media sites are also required to have an age-check system to limit access for under-16s by year-end.
