AI and Mobile Fraud Push Africa’s Cybercrime Losses to $484M

According to INTERPOL’s 2026 African Cyberthreat Assessment Report, online scams remained the continent’s most reported cybercrime, while ransomware, business email compromise, data breaches, financial fraud and digital sextortion continued to target individuals, businesses and critical infrastructure.

AI is increasingly acting as a force multiplier. Criminals are using generative tools to create convincing phishing messages, impersonate executives, produce deepfakes, build synthetic identities and adapt malicious software. INTERPOL found that 55% of cybercrime cases in 2025 involved AI to some extent.

Mobile money fraud was also widespread, with 97% of surveyed countries identifying it as a significant threat. Kenya detected 123,000 fraudulent SIM cards, while Ghana recorded $1.3 million in mobile fraud losses during the first quarter of 2025.

Ransomware caused major operational disruption. A 2025 attack on the Nigeria Customs Service disrupted cargo clearance and reportedly generated $18 million in storage fees. South Africa accounted for 92% of ransomware detections across Africa.

Cryptocurrency-related fraud also grew alongside regional adoption. INTERPOL estimated $205 billion in crypto transactions between July 2024 and July 2025, with Nigeria accounting for $92 billion.

The report warns that weak identity verification, outdated systems and limited cross-border coordination are giving criminals room to scale. INTERPOL is urging stronger cybercrime units, AI-powered detection, deepfake identification, crypto tracing, improved SIM registration controls and faster international evidence sharing.

For digital businesses, the findings underline a growing need for stronger customer verification, fraud monitoring and identity assurance as AI-enabled attacks become cheaper, faster and harder to distinguish online.

Global Precedents in AI-Driven Cybercrime and Digital Fraud

Similar cybercrime waves have hit other regions. In 2024, companies globally faced deepfake-enabled payment fraud, ransomware attacks on healthcare and public services, and large-scale credential theft. Authorities in Europe, Asia, and North America have also warned that AI-generated impersonation, SIM swapping, and synthetic identities are rapidly accelerating financial fraud worldwide.
