The British government is planning to criminalize the production of non-consensual and intimate deepfakes. This approach has a major purpose in resolving the growing proliferation issues of fake images that directly target women and girls. Deepfakes, often created using AI deepfakes technology, make it easy to create highly realistic fake content by using AI. It includes fake videos, photos, or audio, which makes it easy to exploit someone’s likeness into fabricated content. Tools for fake image detection online are increasingly vital in addressing these abuses.
However, the Justice Ministry highlights the extremity of such issues in the current statement, saying, “There is no excuse for generating an intimidating deepfake of someone without their consent.” Moreover, the government is planning to defend every individual, especially women and girls who possibly can face harm due to the invasive and wrong misuse of the technology. AI generated images will likely play a significant role in identifying and preventing such misuse.
Offenders could face fines or imprisonment under the new proposed legislation. Though the Conservative government had proposed something similar during their tenure, the new Labour-led government’s promise to fight intimate image abuse becomes more pronounced. The Ministry of Justice said that it will make further announcements regarding the newest offense in a couple of weeks.
In addition, the government also plans to legislate new measures that will declare the taking of intimate images and the installation of equipment designed to take such intimate images without any consent as criminal activities. Those charged with these offenses may be awarded up to two years in jail.
Victim Minister Alex Davies-Jones reprehended such activities, defining it as “demeaning and disgusting chauvinism” that shouldn’t be normalized in society. Technology Minister Margaret further said that virtual forums that promote abusive or intimate images must experience heavy regulations and important fines if they are not following the right actions.
A campaigner against intimate image abuse, Jess Davies emphasizes the extreme impact of deepfake images. According to her, “Intimate-image abuse is one of the national disasters damaging the women and girls’ reputation in long-term–losing control over their virtual identities due to the online misogyny.”
The new offenses, set to come about through the introduction of a new Crime and Policing Bill, will oblige tech firms to take greater control of the contents their platforms facilitate and host, rather than sitting by and reaping the advertising rewards. With a date set yet for presentation in parliament, the government reinforced its commitment towards ridding Britain of this novel kind of exploitation as well as dignifying all deepfake abuse victims and others targeted through abusive intimate images. Tools like deepfake detection will be integral in achieving these goals. Such actions therefore represent significant milestones in solidifying the UK legal framework against cyber abuses and internet safe spaces.
