India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has asked Meta to revise its content algorithms and submit a compliance roadmap to limit deepfakes, propaganda, manipulated media, and other illegal content across its platforms, according to government sources.
The request followed a meeting between MeitY officials and Meta’s technical team in New Delhi, where the company explained how its current systems detect and moderate harmful content. Officials reportedly pressed Meta for specific algorithmic changes that could reduce the amplification of deceptive posts and accelerate the identification of synthetic or morphed media.
MeitY also wants Meta to strengthen content moderation, respond faster to takedown requests from authorized government agencies, improve coordination with authorities, and meet data localization obligations. Government scrutiny has intensified over deepfakes, Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM), and other harmful material circulating on social platforms.
During discussions, Meta acknowledged gaps in its existing systems and outlined technical measures to improve the detection of synthetic content, sources said. The two sides are expected to continue talks, with another meeting anticipated next week.
The development comes as India tightens oversight of AI-generated content. Earlier this year, the government amended the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules to place synthetically generated information under a clearer regulatory framework, including additional due diligence, identification, and labeling requirements for online intermediaries.
The latest action reflects growing pressure on major platforms to prevent manipulated media from spreading at scale. For Meta, the compliance roadmap could become a key test of how algorithmic recommendation systems, content moderation, and deepfake detection can be adjusted to meet stricter regulatory expectations in one of its largest digital markets while protecting users from rapidly evolving threats.
Similar moves have emerged globally. The EU AI Act requires transparency for certain AI-generated content, while China’s deep-synthesis rules mandate labeling of synthetic media. Meta has also expanded anti-deepfake measures in Australia and received approval in South Korea to use facial recognition to detect celebrity impersonation scams and fraudulent online advertisements.
