Social Platforms Adopt AI Age Assurance for Child Safety

Social media companies are expanding efforts to identify younger users as demand grows for stronger online child protection. Platforms like Meta, Google, TikTok, and Roblox are exploring AI-powered age assurance systems to distinguish between adults and minors. An Associated Press report highlights this shift toward safer digital experiences, exploring AI-powered age assurance systems to strengthen online child safety measures. 

The rising attention comes as lawmakers and regulators have increased focus on protecting children on digital platforms. In the recent settlement with the U.S. states, Meta has made specific commitments to develop age assurance systems, and accurate age detection is crucial to the successful implementation of safety measures. 

To overcome this problem, technology companies are looking at artificial intelligence-based solutions that will analyse various indicators to determine a user’s age. These can range from account usage and user interactions to content preferences and other digital behaviours. There are also platforms examining facial analysis technologies that can analyse a user’s selfie or video to determine age bands, with less emphasis on the use of identity documents.  

But there are also critical privacy, accuracy, bias, and consent issues to consider when using age estimation technology. There is still debate amongst industry experts and digital rights groups about how companies can achieve a balance between safeguarding minors and avoiding unnecessary obstacles and personal data collection. 

The transition underlines the critical role of AI solutions in the digital identity space that prioritise privacy, enabling service providers to build safer online environments. Selfie-based age estimation has been attempted by companies such as Roblox and Discord, indicating a global trend towards AI-driven age verification in the digital realm.
